When a loved one has passed, it can often be daunting to deal with the next steps. In most cases, where the loved one has left a will, an application for probate, the process of authenticating or proving a will, is commenced. However, not every will must be probated.

Where there is no will, the process for administering an estate is an application to court office in the region in which the deceased resided at the date of death. The application is for a certificate of appointment as estate trustee without a will.
